Intro
The Collegiate Church of St. Leodegar is the oldest sacred building listed under the protection of monuments in the canton of Solothurn. It was first mentioned in 778 AD. as the Werith Monastery.
The Collegiate Church of Schönenwerd is a medieval church building that belonged to the monastery of the former Foundation of St. Leodegar. It is a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica whose furnishings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. It was baroqueised in the 18th century.
Of historical value and national importance are the fresco paintings from 1628, the reliquary from the 15th century and the holy tomb of Hans von Falkenstein from 1427. In the 17th century, Schönenwerd became a place of Marian Pilgrimage. A statue of Mary, steeped in legend, still remains in the Lady Chapel of the collegiate church.
