Intro
There are many reasons to visit Avegno: the picturesque stone houses, the romantic location right on the Maggia, the chestnut trees. But Avegno is more than a typical Ticino village: anyone who follows the signposted village walk also explores a piece of Swiss farming history.
The abandoned house from the 16th century, the cellar with presses and casks and the silo for building gravel – they all bear witness to the rural history of the small community of Avegno in the Maggia valley. The village consists of the three districts of Gésgia (centre), Vinzott (outer) and Lüdint (inner) and was awarded the Wakker Prize for the exemplary protection of historical sites in 1982. On the walk, which takes up to four hours, you learn how the community grew, how it almost disappeared entirely 60 years ago and how it is still the centre of life for 527 residents today thanks to moderate development measures.
All the while, you can enjoy the picture-perfect scenery: the beautiful church, the numerous chapels, the wells and the grottos along the cobbled alleys framed by carpets of vines. All this and the Maggia, which flows past on its way into the valley here, provides a worthy setting for the interesting village history.
