Intro

The Mammoth Fixed Rope Trail Schweifine high above the roofs of Zermatt brings action, views into the depth and a magnificent panoramic vista. Three sections with various degrees of difficulty have been installed. The fixed rope trail can also be hiked with a mountain guide.

K5, for the the key overhanging section of route B, which is partly very exposed, K4 for the rest of route B as well as for the long route C, some K2, but mostly K1 for the short, slightly earthy route A. Ladders and/or iron footholds have made the steep sections less difficult.

Location

The fixed rope route is located above the railway station in Zermatt.

Access

From the railway station in Zermatt through Bahnhofstrasse. Shortly after the Alpine Center (Alpin Centrum) the hiker turns right and enters the trail leading to Edelweiss and Trift. Leaving the village, the path leads uphill toward the Trift Gorge. Before the path crosses the bridge over the Triftbach, the path turns right leading to the entrance of the fixed rope trail (approx. 30 minutes).

Fixed Rope Trail

Trail A ascends rocky-earthy terrain, bearing diagonally left. After branching off, the dead-end trail leads to the rappelling point (a mountain guide is mandatory for rapelling) and one hikes a beautiful, exposed section high above the Triftbach stream. Soon one stands in front of a hut called Beresinahütte im Pudel. Here Route B leads downward via a steep section with old stone steps. One can also choose this branch of Route B to reach Route C above the vertical Turuwang. Most of the climbers will descend Route A on a wooded strip, before Route B branches off to the left; the trail to Beresina Hut followed this strip. At the intersection, Route A descends further to the foot of the entire rock wall.
Now up Route B via the smooth, vertical and partially overhanging rock wall, at the top on a metal rope ladder – the key point of the entire tour. Subsequently, one descends in mostly vertical terrain and on a very exposed traverse, even on slightly shaking logs. Finally, the hiker ascends and exits from the Turuwang into the Turu wood, where Route B and C intersect. More beautiful and demanding is the continuation on Route C. Now the tour takes the hiker to a section with a descending traverse and through grooves to a steep ascent, where the arms have to do quite a bit of work. One exits on a shoulder, before traversing up a valley, where at least in early summer the hiking tour passes under a waterfall. Once again the hiker climbs a partially vertical section. A steel rope ladder is a nice diversion. The fixed rope trail ends at about 2,110 meters. Route A can be hiked individually (ideal for families with children above age 10).

Descent

At the exit of Route C one follows the hiking trail to the north, and returns via a loop to Zermatt (4 ½ hours).

Area

Zermatt – Matterhorn Height difference: approx. 650 meters ascent and descent, of which Route A has 320 meters.

Hiking time

4 hours (total), Route A alone is 60 minutes.
