Nationalpark-Panoramaweg
Overview
Intro
A hike over the S-charljoch (Cruschetta), already trodden in pre-Roman times, to Italian Taufers. The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage – the St. Johann Monastery in Müstair – between Taufers and Sta Maria is well worth visiting.
Description
The tour begins in the centre of the village of S-charl. It used to be inhabited only in the summer, but now it also has two winter residents. In the 19th century, the village was known for its lead and silver mines. To learn more about these, make sure you visit the village museum.
The trail begins on a wide Alpine road, which follows the Clemgia river flowing through the forest. Soon it is just a narrow path meandering along the mountain stream. The steep slopes of Mot da l’Hom and Mot Mezdi are looming on the left and on the right.
While an extensive wetland soon begins on the valley floor, the trail climbs up to the natural forest reserve of God da Tamangur. Some of the trees in Europe’s highest closed stone pine forest are up to 800 years old. The forest remains undisturbed by human intervention and is left to develop naturally.
The first opportunity for refreshments comes at Alp Astras in a mountain chalet built of rubble stone. In a long ascent, the trail climbs up to Pass da Costainas. The Clemgia river continues to narrow and meanders through the pastures on the flat valley floor. Steep cliffs are looming on both sides of the valley.
As previously, near the God da Tamangur reserve, the wide path is now shared with mountain bikers until you reach Alp Champatsch. A steep descent after Pass da Costainas is followed by an uphill section along the southeast slope where you have an amazing, far-reaching view across Val Müstair. Further along the southern mountain slope, you walk around Minschuns, the ski mountain of Val Müstair. Crossing the streams that are filling the Lai da Juata mountain lake you get to Alp da Munt. Here, at 2,259 m you have reached the highest point of the tour.
The views of the valley and of Piz Daint und Piz Dora on the opposite side are fantastic. The snow-covered ridge of the Ortler massive is also visible. After the grass-covered Plaun da l'Aua the narrow mountain path enters a rocky pine and larch forest. Near Süsom Givè, which means “high shoulder“, you reach the restaurant and today’s destination on the Ofen Pass.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
