Description
The welcoming Sesvenna Hut of the Alpine Club of South Tyrol is situated a bit below Schlinig Pass. Two small mountain lakes are located directly adjacent to the hut, which is surrounded by Alpine meadows. In western direction, on a small path between boulders, the route begins to climb across Alpine pastures.
Through a steep and slippery gulley you soon reach the flat valley next to Lago Sesvenna. The barren landscape is full of rocks and boulders and the beautiful Alpine flowers add a particularly pleasant touch. The last steep ascent to Fuorcla Sesvenna at an altitude of 2,818 m follows the shores of another blue mountain lake.
Fuorcla Sesvenna is an Alpine saddle on the border between Italy and Switzerland. With majestic Piz Sesvenna, Muntpitschen and Fernerspitz mountains to the left, a steep descent takes you down to the foreland of the severely receding Sesvenna glacier.
Numerous small creeks meandering through the plain are filling the green and white coloured Lai da Sesvenna. The many small lakes with their colourful rocks and sands provide the only contrast in the bleak landscape. The trail now follows the gurgling Aua Sesvenna stream and the area begins to look greener.
Across Alpine pastures, pine forests, along scree slopes and past enormous boulders you eventually reach lovely Alp Sesvenna, which is open in summer. As the mountain stream widens, the Alpine road leads through stone pine forests and along lush pastures to the bus stop in the centre of the village of S-charl.
Originally a summer village, it currently has two residents who live there all year and operate a restaurant. In the 19th century the village was known for its lead and silver mines. The last brown bear of Switzerland was shot near S-charl in 1904. If you want to know more about this story, be sure to visit the village museum.
