Description
Nestled in the Fribourg Prealps, the Schwarzsee lake is surrounded by magnificent natural scenery. Legend has it that the lake’s water is so dark because a giant once washed his feet in it. Depending on the angle of the light, it shimmers in different colours ranging from dark green to turquoise. The walk to the other end of the lake starts at the cable car and restaurant. In actual fact, you are still within Gantrisch Nature Park at this point but just 200 metres further on, you will be in Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut nature park. Hugging the shore of the lake, you will come to the forest.
Next is the climb into glacier-formed Breccaschlund, a natural monument of national importance. Around two hours in, you will arrive in the heart of the valley containing the Marbach Alpine cabin. The green of the meadows, the wealth of Alpine flowers, the old drystone walls and the grazing cows and goats all lend the area a wild and fairytale-like quality.
The limestone slopes are riddled with sinkholes. You will circumnavigate the rock face of the Spitzflue mountain via Rippetli and the Stierenberg. The view over the Schwarzsee lake is fantastic. Down a short flight of steps, you will soon find the second tavern, “Unterer Euschels”, where you can stop for a break. Once you have gathered your strength, you can press ahead with the last climb. The Euschelspass boasts views of the imposing peaks of the Gastlosen mountain range.
Lastly, you will have a good hour’s descent to Jaun, the only German-speaking village in the Gruyère district. Past the beautiful 19th century church, you will arrive at your destination for this rather short leg of the Alpine Panorama Trail.
