SWISS MADE CULTURE POP-UP Encounters: The key to dreams. Surrealist masterpieces from the Hersaint Collection
Overview
Description
Evangéline Hersaint Lair in conversation with Raphaël Bouvier, Senior Curator, Beyeler Foundation, Riehen/Basel
From 16 February to 4 May 2025, the Fondation Beyeler is staging a world premiere exhibition of Surrealist masterpieces from the Hersaint Collection. The exhibition brings together some 50 major works by artists including Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Dorothea Tanning and many others. These images deal with themes dear to surrealism, such as dreams, the unconscious, metamorphosis and the forest as a place of mystery. The collection was established by banker Claude Hersaint, who bought his first painting by Max Ernst when he was just 17, laying the foundations for an undiminished passion for Surrealism that would go on to establish one of the most important collections of Surrealist art. Paintings from the Hersaint Collection are presented in dialogue with works from the Fondation Beyeler.
