Sunny trail with a steady climb, followed by a somewhat steeper descent. Your efforts will be rewarded with majestic views of two valleys and the peaks of the high-Alpine UNESCO landscape. At the halfway point, you’ll have a chance to stop at a mountain restaurant for a well-deserved break.
Description
Unspoiled nature, delightful forests, dazzling snow fields, a magnificent panorama and plenty of sun – this is what awaits snowshoe hikers on the way from Bellwald, the highest municipality in Goms, to the Fleschen mountain restaurant and back again. On the trail, snowshoe hikers will tackle more than 400 metres of altitude difference.
The snowshoe outing begins with a gentle uphill climb, first between chalets and then through the woods. It’s worth taking a break on the ascent through the forest. If you’re quiet and lucky enough, you might be able to spot some of the local wildlife. Once the trail has left the tree line, there are spectacular views of the Rhône Valley and the snow-covered peaks of the Binntal Valley. The trail then continues across open countryside to the Fleschen mountain restaurant with its cosy sun terrace. This is the highest point of the route.
The second half of the hike is downhill via south-west-facing hillsides with views of the Fieschertal Valley. This section of the path also offers beautiful views of the valley and of the glistening peaks of the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site, which protects the most glaciated region of the Alps. The unique high-Alpine landscape with the Great Aletsch Glacier at its core was formed over thousands of years. Above the hamlet of Ried with its sun-browned Valais houses, the trail then winds back to Richinen valley station.
