Culinary hiking experience with the Treno Gottardo
Overview
Intro
Operated by the Südostbahn railway company, the modern Treno Gottardo travels from Zurich, Basel, Lucerne or Locarno to Andermatt. From there, you will take the Gütsch-Express to the middle station, where you can enjoy coffee and croissants at the Matti family restaurant. Afterwards, you will continue on towards Gütsch by gondola and then hike to the Schneehüenerstock, passing the breathtaking Lutersee mountain lake on the way.
Here, you can enjoy some traditional Älplermagronen (Alpine macaroni) as a main course at the restaurant with the best viewing terrace. Once you’ve eaten, the gondola will take you back down to the Oberalp Pass, where you can treat yourself to coffee and dessert at Piz Calmot.
Excluding refreshment breaks, the entire circular hike takes approx. 3 hours, including hiking time of approx. 1.5-2 hours. Ideal for guests with moderate hiking abilities.
As another highlight, you can download an audio guide to your smartphone free of charge and discover a wealth of interesting facts about the surrounding area as you complete the circuit. Online vouchers for the mountain railway ticket and gastronomy offers must be redeemed at the cash desk at Andermatt station.
Travel to and from Zurich, Locarno or Basel-Lucerne is on the Treno Gottardo (IR26/46). However, you may also travel with SBB as far as Arth-Goldau and then change to the Treno Gottardo. The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn line runs from Göschenen to Andermatt and back again. To extend your stay in Andermatt, you can simply book your return journey for a later date.
