The route leads along the Lago Lucendro lake to the source of the Reuss at the foot of the Lucendropass and on over the pass. After a long and scenic high-level hike above the Bedrettotal valley, you reach your destination – the Piansecco Hut.
Description
The Gotthard Pass not only marks the linguistic border between German-speaking and Italian-speaking Switzerland, but also the watershed between the Mediterranean and the North Sea. In the Gotthard region, the rivers Rhine, Rhone, Reuss and Ticino form the water lock of Europe.
This stage starts from Lago della Piazza. From here the path runs steeply downhill to Alp Rosso di Dentro. First the trail leads to the San Carlo Fortress, one of three large Swiss Army fortresses. The Hotel La Claustra, a unique fortress hotel, is also located here. We then continue to the impressive Lake Lucendro dam. Once you reach lake height, the route continues slightly above this medium-sized reservoir. When you arrive at Alpe di Lucendro at an altitude of around 2,181 metres, the gravel road turns into a narrow path that gradually becomes steeper. The path winds up to a small lake, the source of the Gotthard-Reuss. This initially small trickle soon becomes a stream and later a 164-kilometre-long river. You have the opportunity to take a well-deserved rest here.
Shortly after the headwaters, you reach the Passo di Lucendro at an altitude of around 2,530 metres. From here, the path leads steeply downhill to Alp Rosso di Dentro.
The last part of the trail leads across the Alpe di Ruino to the Piansecco SAC hut, the destination for this stage, at an altitude of around 1,988 metres. There are blueberry and cranberry bushes to the left and right of the path. Shortly before the destination, a section passes through larch forests. In autumn in particular, they glimmer in a beautiful golden yellow high above the Bedretto Valley.
