The Malcantone with its rolling hills and lush vegetation stretches from Lake Lugano to Monte Lena. The area is known for its chestnuts, which used to be the main produce of the area. Today, lush chestnut groves remain an important attraction and the "Sentiere de castegno" leads you to discover these thick and knotted trees in a hike that takes about 5 hours. There is much to learn about the chestnut, once an important staple that was cooked or ground into flower. The leaves of the trees made good hay in the stables and the trunks were used for construction, and as firewood. From the idyllic Chestnut Trail at Arosio you enjoy great views of the Malcantone region and the Gradiccioli mountain chain with the quaint little villages of Mugena, Vezio and Fescoggia sitting across the valley.
