Grindelwald

The village below the Eiger: Grindelwald is a winter playground set against an unparalleled icecapped mountain backdrop.
The majestic Wetterhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, lined up in a row, look down on the village at the foot of the North Face of the Eiger. It was here, 150 years ago, that Alpinism was born. Since then, Grindelwald has evolved into a modern resort, offering families as well as thrill-seekers all manner of services. There are two big reasons for Grindelwald’s popularity:

The two famous ski areas

On one side the slopes stretch up to the Kleine Scheidegg and the Männlichen. This area is best suited to experienced skiers and snowboarders, with 110 km of top-quality pistes, 19 lifts and numerous cosy mountain restaurants. This winter sports zone is deservedly one of the most popular in Switzerland. On the other side lies the fun-filled snowsports area of Grindelwald- First. Here conditions appeal particularly to snowboarders and freestyle skiers – not least at the White Elements snowpark. Families also appreciate the 50 km of piste, especially the 30 kmh low-speed zone. The First area is proud too of its “first class” winter walking paths, with clear views of the famous mountain backdrop.

Top tip

15 km of pure fun: the longest toboggan run in Europe leads from the top of the Faulhorn (2,681 m) down to Grindelwald village. The two-hour walk up from First follows the most scenic winter paths in the Alps.
