Museum Tinguely Basel is dedicated to the life and work of Jean Tingley, the most important Swiss iron scuptor (1925-1991). It is located on the bank of the Rhine River and was built by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta. The permanent exhibition shows movable machine sculptures from all periods of his work.
A varied program with special exhibitions on Tinguely's companions and his contemporaries as well as on other modern artists accompany the collection presented in the museum.
The permanent exhibition shows works from the artist's beginnings in the fifties - with motordriven reliefs, drawing machines and the scrap assemblages of the sixties - through the black-painted machine sculptures, to the large sculptures and pandemonic cycles of his last creative period.
The museum, designed and built by the architect Mario Botta, comprises varied spatial structures that enter into dialogue in size and mood with the various series of work.
