Triple winter fun: From Brig it is easy to reach the famous big ski resorts of the Valais. But the true gems lie much closer. Directly above this alpine town lie three wonderfully intimate resorts offering a variety of pleasures on the pistes: Blatten/Belalp, Rosswald and Rothwald. Common to each is their
unmistakable Valais charm.
The traditional small village of Blatten, with its sun-darkened wooden chalets, is the ideal base for winter sports up on sunny Belalp; it is also well known for its footpaths and glacier trails. Queues are virtually unheard of: the new six-seater chairlift – the longest in Switzerland – is both swift and very comfortable, with its padded seats and protective hoods. The idyllic car-free village of Rosswald is the best-value family destination in Switzerland. Thanks to new snowmaking equipment, all of the pistes are snowsure; its location, high on a sunny terrace, makes for sweeping views of the Valais mountains.
Top tip
January is high season for the witches of Belalp. Hundreds of the ghoulish figures take to their broomsticks (and skis) for the traditional Witches’ Descent (www.belalphexe.ch) from Hohstock to Blatten.
